Also OFFERING PENNYSLVANIA HOMESCHOOL EVALUATIONS

Educational Background

Tabatha Schreck is a certified teacher in the state of Pennsylvania. Her certificate was issued in 06/2005, number 05017116. She has a BS in Elementary Education from Penn State University with a MEd in Reading from Bloomsburg University.

Relevant Experience

Tabatha taught in the Milton Area School District for 5 years. She has been teaching and grading as a private tutor at the elementary level for 6 years and at the secondary level for 2 years. She has homeschooled her own children for 8 years and has conducted homeschool evaluations for 7 years.

Filing With Your Local District

  • You must file an affidavit or unsworn declaration with your school district prior to commencing homeschooling and each following year by August 1. I recommend July 1, as that is the legal day that you can begin “counting days” for the homeschool year.
  • If  your child has never attended public school, you must file an affidavit or unsworn declaration with the school district the year he/she attains compulsory attendance age, which is currently six years old.
    •  “Specifically, a child who has attained the age of 6 on or before September 1 must enroll and attend school or begin a home school program that year.”
  • If your child is enrolled in public school, then you must file an affidavit or unsworn declaration with the school district regardless of the age.
    • However, a parent may withdraw a child from public school if the parent does not believe the child is ready for school. In this case, if the child is not yet 6, HSLDA takes the position that the compulsory school attendance law would not apply once the child is formally withdrawn from school.

Withdrawing During the Summer

  • File your affidavit and other needed documents with the school superintendent before the start of the public school year and before starting the home education program. The PA      Homeschool Year runs from July 1st – June 30th each year.
  • Withdrawal from your public/private school.

Withdrawing During the School Year

  • Immediately file your affidavit/unsworn declaration and other needed documents with      the school superintendent. It is recommended that your child miss no more than 3 consecutive days of public/private school before you file to avoid truancy issues. Once you file the affidavit and other needed documents, you would officially be homeschooling and the truancy statutes would no longer apply.
  • Withdrawal from your public/private school.

Standardized Testing

  • Your child only needs to test during grades 3, 5, and 8.
  • Your evaluator only needs to see that your child took the test.
  • There are several options available, but I recommend the untimed versions of Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) or the California Achievement Test (CAT). Ultimately, you need to choose which test is best for your child.
  • You may not test your own child, however, with some online versions, the computer serves as the proctor. All rules need to be followed to ensure accuracy of the test.
  • If you'd prefer, your school district is required to administer the PSSA to your child upon request.
  • If you have a child that requires accommodations, you should contact the testing company to see what they permit.
  • I am happy to proctor a test for your child at the rate of $40/hr.

The Evaluation Process

I begin scheduling homeschool evaluations in March and typically conduct them in May and June. You should submit your evaluation to your school district each year by June 30. Once your evaluation is scheduled, I ask that you fill out a pre-evaluation form that will help guide discussion during the process. My evaluations are more of a conversation. I love to hear how families have felt successful during the year. Many share photos, artwork, special projects, and anything that displays where they've been and what they've worked on. I ask for beginning, middle, and end of the year samples in the core subjects. It is rewarding to see the progress that occurred with each student. During your school year, you will keep a log for days/hours as well as a reading log, both of which you will bring along. Before we conclude, goals are set for the upcoming year. You will go home with two signed copies of the evaluation. My price is $40 for the first K-8 student and $30 for each additional K-8 student. High school evaluations are $50 each. Please know that this fee also allows you to email or call me for the entire next school year. I am here to help, and I look forward to meeting with your family!
